01/12/2004. Edgar Davids has finalised his loan move from Juventus to Barcelona after passing a medical at the Catalan club on Monday evening.
The 30-year-old Dutch international midfielder will play for Barcelona until the end of the season, when his Juve contract expires. Barça will then have an option to make the move permanent.
Barça president Juan Laporta welcomed the high-profile former Ajax and Milan star to Camp Nou. "He's one of those players who's recognised everywhere in the world," Laporta told the media at the player's presentation.
"He's another 'crack' for the club, following the signing of Ronaldinho before the start of the season."
Davids agreed to the short-term transfer during a late-night meeting with Laporta on Sunday.
"He's in good shape," Barcelona doctor Jordi Ardevol told reporters. "There's room for improvement but he's good."
Davids will join a large Dutch contingent already at Barcelona. The squad is coached by Frank Rijkaard and his assistant Henk Ten Cate, and includes Philip Cocu, Michael Reiziger, Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst.
Rijkaard played alongside Davids in the 1995 Ajax European Cup winning side, and will hope the new midfielder can strengthen a side that has been inconsistent all season – the coach's first in charge.
Barça beat Real Zaragoza 3-0 on Sunday, but are still only in seventh place, 16 points behind leaders Valencia.
